One of the most important spaces in your home, the living room is a place to relax and unwind, hang out with family or entertain friends. A considered design is inviting - you’ll need the perfect sofa - yet polished.
Our tips will help you strike the perfect balance between functional and chic.
Unless the space dictates your layout, place the biggest pieces of furniture (the sofa and chairs) in the room first. Once furniture is in place, use rugs to create a focal point for the room, add a cosy feel and absorb noise.
A contemporary approach is to place your furniture on top of the rug (you’ll need a rug around 2.5 metres x 3.5 metres for this) or opt for a small rug in the centre of your furniture and place a coffee table on top.
Buying a lounge suite can be dated. Different pieces in a similar scale and shade will result in a more unique feel. Complete the look with end tables; ideally around the same height as the sofa arm so it’s easy to rest a drink there. In small spaces they can be paired together as a coffee table, while an ottoman can double as a footrest, coffee table or extra seating.
Don’t underestimate lighting. Use ceiling, table and floor lamps to create cosy spaces for reading, ambient areas for dining or a bright, cheery space - all at the flick of a switch. Install a dimmer and you’ll have instant mood lighting for any occasion. A monochrome interior is timeless (and great if you’re planning on selling your property) but once all your furniture is in place don’t be afraid to add colour and personality with cushions, throws, art and accessories.
A coffee table vignette is a quick way to up your style quotient; simply place a group of interesting items such as a vase, decorative sculptures and some books
