8 ways to make your home feel like a holiday home

Unfortunately, the summer holidays don’t last forever, but these laid-back coastal-retreat styling tips let you enjoy bach vibes in your abode all year round.

1. Sink into soft furnishings

Carry on that holiday feeling by creating a space that’s perfect for lounging about in. A low slung sofa in natural materials and a neutral shade is just the ticket when paired with a matching occasional chair or ottoman. Go for as large a sofa as you can fit, which allows family and friends to gather in comfort and then make it even more plush by topping it off with oversized cushions and a chunky knit throw.

2. Bring the outdoors in

Kiwis have long held a love affair with homes that have indoor outdoor flow. But if your lounge doesn’t open to the barbeque or the beach, consider adding an outdoor style rug inside for instant casual cool in your living space. With its blend of wool, cotton and longwearing jute, our Atlas rug will protect your carpets or wood flooring, while adding a pleasant texture beneath bare feet.

3. Get back to nature

When it comes to quality, it’s hard to beat luxurious natural fibres such as wool, linen and cotton, which are long-lasting and oh-so-comfortable against the skin. Make friends with linen’s laidback crumpled appearance and you’ll also fall in love with its benefits - it doesn’t pill, is resistant to sunlight and moths, is washable and dry-cleanable. In other words, it’s the ultimate low-maintenance option for your summer-style furnishings.

4. Make sustainability a priority

Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration when it comes to furniture. Our Karpenter wood furniture uses materials sourced from environmentally sustainable suppliers, which is not only a better option for the environment, but the natural element gives your home a calming, coastal-inspired style.

5. Keep it simple

With its clean lines and streamlined look, contemporary furniture lends a sense of lightness to a room and can even make small spaces seem larger. The other advantage to keeping your big ticket furnishing simple is that it allows your decor to stand out without resulting in a cluttered look. Cushions, throws, rugs and seaside or surf inspired wall art can complete the look by adding textural interest and add pops of colour that can easily be changed out as  new season rolls in.

6. Embrace easy care

Forget high maintenance ‘you can’t sit on that’ furniture and invest in plush sofas and chairs that are made for curling up in comfort. Better still, if you have a young family or love to entertain, consider our sofas with washable covers, which allow you to easily play host to friends and family without fretting too much about accidental spills.

7. It’ll be all white

If you’re looking to freshen up your home, you can’t go wrong with a whitewashed finish on floors, walls and ceilings. However, you’ll need to choose the shade carefully. The top tip? For a cohesive look, stick with either warm or cool whites in your walls and furnishings. Warm whites tend to look better in older homes with smaller windows, while cool whites lend an architectural quality to modern builds.

8. Bring in the bach

Bach-inspired decor is sure to make your home feel like your happy place. And it couldn’t be easier to give your home summer style. Add plenty of hooks to your walls to hang straw hats, beach bags or turkish towels for a colourful display.
